Sip wine, support historical society

Now that the holidays are over and the dreary days of January are upon us, the Mount Prospect Historical Society and Vino 100, the new wine shop in town, are teaming up to raise operating funds for the society and to give all of us a chance to taste some sparkling wines and champagnes to spice up our new year.

On Jan. 24, adults over 21 are invited to a wine-tasting event at the Vino 100 wine shop, 110 S. Emerson St. from 6 to 9 p.m. A selection of sparkling wines and champagnes will be available to sample and hors d'oeuvres, provided by the historical society, will be served.

Admission at the door will be $10 per person, and 5 percent of all wine sale proceeds will be contributed to the Mount Prospect Historical Society.

"Through the enthusiastic support of hundreds of contributors, we've reached the phase one goal in our fundraising that will enable us to save the historic Central School and move it to the Historical Society campus on Maple Street," explained Gavin Kleespies, executive director of the Society.

"With this event, generously co-sponsored by Vino 100 in Mount Prospect, we hope to celebrate this achievement and the fantastic support we have received from every one in the community to date," he continued.

Gallery/crafts shop opens:ΠMount Prospect has a new place where you can shop for a gift for a friend or a fun accent for your home.

A gallery and fine goods shop called Artisan 133 has opened at 133 West Prospect Ave. in Mount Prospect. The shop is owned by area residents Cindy Riesing and Beth Benoit.

Artisan 133 carries handmade one-of-a-kind items crafted by area artists and others from as far away as the Virgin Islands. Visit the shop and you will find beaded, semiprecious stone, fine silver and other jewelry, pottery, boiled wool hats and bags, luxury scarves, hand-made cards, as well as a selection of paintings, photographs, collages, papier-mache, and prints.

Friday, from 4 to 8 p.m., Artisan 133 will host its first featured artist reception. Dana Fox, a designer of distinctive jewelry based in Kenosha, Wis., will be this month's artist. If you wish to see her work, it can be seen in the shop and at www.designs-by-dana.com.

The public is invited to enjoy refreshments and meet Fox, as well as see this new shop.

Matchbook collection:ŒLongtime resident Frank Auer has loaned his extensive collection of matchbooks and matchboxes to the Mount Prospect Public Library for an exhibit this month. It is on display through the end of January in a display case in the large meeting room at the library, 10 S. Emerson St.

The collection includes matchbooks and matchboxes from throughout the United States, as well as Europe and Japan, and was given to Auer by a friend, who has since died.

The most unique items on display, according to Auer, is a series of fortune-telling matchboxes with fortune slips attached. They came from San Francisco.
