Speed limits to change in Mt. Prospect
The Mount Prospect village board Tuesday night approved a traffic study that changed the speed limit and traffic signs for the south central portion of town.
The unanimous vote was the latest development for the community-wide study that's helping the village retool traffic flow in various sections of town.
For the study, the village has split the town into 18 areas, typically working on two to three zones at a time.
Most recently, the board reviewed Zone 14, Lincoln Street on the north, Route 83 on the east, Golf Road on the south and Busse Road on the west, and Zone 17, Golf Road on the north, Route 83 on the east, Dempster Street on the south and Busse Road on the west.
In these two sections, the board approved a measure to make the speed on all residential streets 25 mph, except along Linneman Road, where it will remain 30 mph, and streets next to Robert Frost School, which will be 20 mph, village officials said.
The village had sent letters to more than 3,800 residences in the two zones, inviting people to an open house last year on the proposed changes to traffic signs, said Matt Lawrie, project engineer. Resident comments are always considered before the board votes on the changes, Lawrie said.
The village had approved changes most recently last year in two zones in the central part of town. That plan also had called for adding some stop signs and taking out others based on studies done by the engineering department and consulting firm KLOA Inc.
Excluding Zones 14 and 17, the village has completed changes in six zones on the west central side of the village.
The village engineering department will move onto Zones 11, 16 and 18 on the southwest part of the village.
The village expects to hold an open house for these zones at the end of February. Letters will be sent to residents, denoting the time, date and place of the meeting. If all goes as planned, the board would vote on the plans in March, Lawrie said.
