Solving traffic woes is a balancing act
Reading Georgia Garvey's article on the District 16 candidates' solution to unsnarling traffic (on Jan. 10), Terry Wilke's point about referendums to raise money for road projects not being specific about which projects will be funded was right on. Short of the tollway agreeing to building an I-594 from the end of 53 at Lake Cook Road north to Route 120, there is no large pot of money sitting somewhere to get larger projects done.
Douglas Williams misses the point about mass transit funding being the end-all solution. While I personally support more transit funding, it must be balanced with highway improvements. I live three blocks from Metra, but no matter how many trains they put on that line, Metra is not going to Elk Grove Village or Woodfield. Taking mass transit for two hours is not an alternative to driving 35 miles.
Candidates need to face reality that traffic solutions involve a balance between transit and highway improvements -- it's not one or the other.
