Viator wins, going away

Lauren Fabbri and the St. Viator seniors celebrated their "going-away party" with a victory over Joliet Catholic Monday night at Cahill Gymnasium.

Fabbri's 3-point play got the Lions' girls basketball team off and roaring 30 seconds into the East Suburban Catholic Conference and the hosts proceeded to draw away to a 21-4 lead midway through the second period.

And it was Fabbri's 8-foot bank shot with three seconds left that capped the scoring in the 45-29 triumph in the Lions' final home game of the season.

"That's the way we wanted to end it," said senior Danielle Volpe.

Volpe (4 points) was one of seven seniors honored before the game along with Christine Supergan (1 point), Kelsey Floyd (3 points), Sarah Lakowske (4 points), Jenny Muench (6 points), Tori Callero (6 points) and Fabbri (5 points).

"I'll always remember my last home game," said Fabbri, a 5-foot-5 guard. "It was really nice to finish things off here like this. It went by so fast."

It will just be road trips the rest of the way for the Lions, who improved to 9-11 and 3-5 in the ESCC.

"It was nice to see Lauren play well," said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. "Kelsey hit a 3-pointer, Christine scored, and Sarah and Danielle showed good composure."

Muench and Callero, normally starters, came off the bench.

"That was a great gesture by Jenny and Tori," said Bjerkness, who has been without sophomore Mary Calov (knee) and junior Sophie Martin (wrist) since the Snowflake tourney.

"It was very mature of them to let our other seniors start. They've all put in four years in the program and it's nice to see everyone play and they all scored. And the underclassmen were supportive of everyone."

Junior Colleen Nolan, junior Christine Muench and junior Mandy Kompanowski also scored for the winners.

Joliet Catholic came into the game at 4-14 and stands at 0-5 in the ESCC.

Second-year coach John Barkoski watched two sophomore starters injure knees in the Angels' first game of the season.

Kate Ponce was lost for the season with an ACL injury while Annemarie Hickey has been going through physical therapy since the injury and may be available when the state playoffs begin in February.

Sophomore Susan Hohenadel added 6 points for the Lions while junior Kelly Hendricks added 5.

"We finally got a good win," Muench said. "It was nice to see all our seniors score. They deserve it."

Now Muench and Lions have seven straight roads game to close out the regular sons.

"I know it's not a great schedule," Muench said. "But what can you do? Hopefully we'll pull some wins out."

Fremd 48, Streamwood 26: The Fremd girls basketball team won its fourth straight Monday night by following a policy of inclusion.

Each of the 14 players on coach Dave Yates' roster saw significant playing time and 10 cracked the scoring column in a 48-26 nonconference win at Streamwood, which committed 27 turnovers and mustered just 25 shots as a result.

"That's normal," Vikings junior guard Sam Thelin said. "We have 14 players and we all work well together, so it's all good."

Fremd (10-9) did most of its damage with defense.

Using a full-court press that flustered Streamwood (2-17) all night long, the Vikings jumped to an 11-5 lead after a quarter and held a 23-9 advantage at halftime on the strength of 8 first-half points from senior guard Tracey Nachtsheim, who buried 3-pointers in each of the first two quarters.

"We were working our inside-outside game and it was working," Nachtsheim said. "I give the (posts) credit for kicking it out."

Streamwood finished the first half with more turnovers (12) than shot attempts (11).

"Defensively, we were fine in the first half," Streamwood coach George Rosner said. "We held a team to 23 points and half of those came from their defense. If we could have scored a few points and attacked the basket, who knows? That was the difference."

Fremd eliminated any suspense by outscoring the Sabres 13-4 in the third quarter to take a commanding 36-13 lead. Streamwood turned the ball over 10 times in the third quarter alone.

"I thought in the second half we kind of did what we wanted to do," Fremd coach Dave Yates said. "That's how we wanted to do it from the get go: get out and pressure them. That's what we've been doing all year."

Sophomore guard Taylor Glassman tied Nachtsheim for Fremd team scoring honors with 10 points.
