Fremd wins fourth straight
The Fremd girls basketball team won its fourth straight Monday night by following a policy of inclusion.
Each of the 14 players on coach Dave Yates' roster saw significant playing time and 10 cracked the scoring column in a 48-26 nonconference win at Streamwood, which committed 27 turnovers and mustered just 25 shots as a result.
"That's normal," Vikings junior guard Sam Thelin said. "We have 14 players and we all work well together, so it's all good."
Fremd (10-9) did most of its damage with defense.
Using a full-court press that flustered Streamwood (2-17) all night long, the Vikings jumped to an 11-5 lead after a quarter and held a 23-9 advantage at halftime on the strength of 8 first-half points from senior guard Tracey Nachtsheim, who buried 3-pointers in each of the first two quarters.
Streamwood finished the first half with more turnovers (12) than shot attempts (11).
"Defensively, we were fine in the first half," Streamwood coach George Rosner said. "We held a team to 23 points and half of those came from their defense. If we could have scored a few points and attacked the basket, who knows? That was the difference.
"We had some good opportunities, but we passed up some open shots. We pretty much have an open-shooting policy. If you're open, shoot the ball, but there were some people who passed up some really good looks, I thought."
Junior guard Lizi Liberman led the Sabres with 6 points while sophomore Melissa Oehlerking added 5 points, all on free throws.
