Heiss credits many people for helping him set record

Waubonsee Community College's long-time men's basketball coach Dave Heiss became the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference's all-time leader in victories Tuesday evening as the Chiefs downed visiting Elgin Community College 91-67.

Heiss passed former College of Lake County coach Dr. Bruce Smith (1970-1996) with his 191st career coaching victory in the league.

"It's an honor not only for myself, but also a testament to all the outstanding coaches and players I've been associated with, and for my family, colleagues and the college as well," said Heiss.

In his 23rd season leading the Chiefs, Heiss has coached Waubonsee to nine league titles and has compiled a 427-281 career record.

In the record breaking victory, Heiss' Chiefs led just 35-31 with a minute to go until halftime before tallying the last five points of the frame. Heiss' squad reeled off a 20-8 run the initial five minutes of the second half to build a comfortable 60-39 lead. Waubonsee (6-6) kept the Spartans (5-8) at arm's length the remainder of the contest to easily win their 2008 Skyway opener.

Tuesday evening's contest was recorded by the college's Media Services and Communication Departments for broadcasting and cablecast locally at a time yet to be determined. For more information, contact Waubonsee's Media Services at (630) 466-7900, ext. 2099.
