Policy on candidate support
In light of the upcoming Illinois primary, Buffalo Grove's village board will review its policy on trustees and the village president supporting candidates.
Village President Elliott Hartstein recently wrote a letter to the editor in support of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
While trustees said they didn't question Hartstein's right to campaign and express his personal opinions, they said by signing the letter as Buffalo Grove village president, Hartstein left the impression that he was speaking for the entire board.
Trustee Jeff Braiman said he'd like to have a policy laid out "so we all know where we stand."
Hartstein defended his right to his opinions, which trustees agreed with. But they also said there are ways to ensure that the support of the entire village board isn't implied in a political endorsement.
"There are ways to avoid entangling ourselves and our positions in that process," Trustee Jeff Berman said.
History of a road: Jim and Judy Otis of Arlington Heights will do a presentation for the Wheeling Historical Society on the origins of Route 12.
The program will be 8 p.m. Jan. 23.
The Otises, who love to travel and explore American history, live near Route 12 and researched the origins of the highway a few years back.
They also made a trip on the road in 2001 and will present photographs of the 2,491-mile Yellowstone Trail.
The presentation will be at the Wheeling Historical complex, 506 McHenry Road.
Clear out your trees: Buffalo Grove is encouraging residents serviced by Waste Management to put their Christmas trees out on the curb for pickup this week and next week. The trees should be free of decorations.
