Fans call an audible on Bears and Angelo

Our readers have their say…

Bears should start by fixing the O-line

Offensive line should be priority number 1, 2, and 3. Cleveland went from a laughingstock to contender in one season. They drafted tackle Joe Thomas, signed guard Eric Steinbach as a free agent, and got center LeCharles Bentley back from injury. It's no surprise to me why Derek Anderson, Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards, and Jamal Lewis all had great years. It was because of the O-line.

There are lots of free agents-to-be out there. The draft has some great prospects too. Fix this and we're back.

Team needs more quality receivers

"We have a good nucleus of offensive players," he said. "We have a good blend. We have good possession receivers, we have good slot receivers, we have speed receivers."

If Jerry Angelo really believes this, then the debate over the problem with the Bears is over. The receivers may look good on the sideline or in practice, but in a game they can't get open, and when they do they drop the ball. The only receiver who could start on a quality team is Bernard Berrian.

Make Bears offense the biggest priority

I believe that the Bears need to focus on the offensive line by moving John Tait to right tackle and drafting a left tackle (by moving up in the draft).

They should go into free agency and pick one up, like Pittsburgh's guard.

Then we need a quality quarterback, one that can move in the pocket and look at different receivers.

We also need a good running back and a No. 1 receiver. Forget about Cedric Benson.

On defense, we need a good safety to complement Mike Brown and we need to keep Lance Briggs.

At defensive end, Mark Anderson should not start; he was more effective last year. The team needs to stop giving certain players a starting position -- they need to earn it.

I would rather have a great offense than a top five defense. Brendon Ayanbadejo must be back as well.

It is very scary to hear parts of Jerry Angelo's press conference that states they have a solid core of offensive players. Someone needs to have a serious talk with him. Takeaways are great, but we need to have a good offense to put points on the board, and I am not talking about field goals.

Mendenhall would look great on Bears

I'd love to get Rashard Mendenhall from Illinois. He's fast, powerful, shifty (can make people miss) and can catch. A topflight running back like Mendenhall can help a quarterback and the offensive line since he can go the distance anytime and is a playmaker. Passing would open up since defenses must stack up to stop him (running) and cover him (passing).

With Cedric Benson, the Bears must greatly upgrade at quarterback and the entire O-line since they have to make perfect passes and blocks and make long drives to score. See what Adrian Peterson did for Minnesota.

Mendenhall is a much better as a teammate, has a better attitude and is more coachable than Benson.

The O-line can be fixed in second and third rounds, especially since there's many tackles available.

After Mendenhall and the line, the next priority is wide receive. Bernard Berrian may not stay,Mushin Muhammad is near the end, and Mark Bradley has been a disappointment.

Devin Hester can't be the No. 1 receiver since he would be too beat up to make a difference returning kicks -- he needs help. He's also not a tall, strong possession WR with great hands to move the chains.

Please, don't stick with QB Grossman

Here is a list of what the Bears priorities should be this offseason:

Draft, sign, trade or promote at least three new starters on the offensive line. Get two new tackles and a left guard. It wouldn't hurt to look into a new right guard as well.

Do not re-sign Rex Grossman! Honestly, I like him, but he's had his run in Chicago.

Find a taker for Cedric Benson. Watching Cedric Benson play makes me pine for the days of Rashaan Salaam.

Let Lance Briggs and Bernard Berrian go. Let some other team overpay for them.

Sign receiver Bryant Johnson from the Arizona Cardinals. He's a good player, with about the same skills as Berrian, but cheaper.

Work 20 hours a day with Hester on the playbook.

Send Ron Turner to meet with the Colts offensive coordinator on how to effectively use two tight end sets.

Draft a QB, WR, O-Line, RB with the first four picks this year and repeat.

If you'll notice, not much was said about the defense. While they stunk, I think it is more important that they get their offense in good shape. If the offense is good and scores more points, the defense is then able to do what it does best: pressure the QB and create turnovers.
