Man found dead at Pheasant Run resort drowned

A man who died Dec. 28 in a swimming pool at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles drowned, according to a preliminary report Thursday from the Kane County coroner.

Javier Gonzales, 21, was found unresponsive in the 11-foot-deep end of the outdoor portion of an indoor-outdoor pool shortly before 3 p.m.

Resort workers pulled him out and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to St. Charles police.

He was pronounced dead at 3:42 p.m. at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva.

Gonzales, of Garden Prairie, Ill., was a guest at the resort. Relatives told police he was playing a game in the pool with them, and when they didn't see him for a few minutes, they found him at the bottom of the pool.

Toxicology samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory for testing.

Police spokesman Paul McCurtain said there was no indication of any pool mechanical failure that could have caused the death, and that it does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved. The pool was reopened over the weekend, according to Mike Larson, general manager for the resort.

"We're trying to piece together a timeline of what happened. At this point it does not look like an equipment failure," Larson said Thursday.

The indoor-outdoor pool is in the center of the resort, south of the main entrance and front desk area.

The resort has three pools: one in its atrium, one in an outside courtyard and the indoor-outdoor pool.
