Bartlett man dies during workout

A 23-year-old Bartlett man died after he collapsed while working out Wednesday at a Streamwood Park District gym.

Michael Dean Otis was weighing himself about 3:30 p.m. when he collapsed, Streamwood police said.

Otis was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, where he was pronounced dead at 4:13 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Results from the autopsy done Thursday are pending toxicology reports, which tend to take up to several weeks, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Streamwood police do not suspect foul play. "We have no reason to think his death is suspicious," Deputy Chief Jim Gremo said.

Prior to weighing himself, Otis was seen bench-pressing weights at the Park Place Family Recreation Center at 550 S. Park Blvd., the medical examiner's office said. Park Place is located inside the Streamwood Community Center. Staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the Streamwood Fire Department arrived.

Otis, who police said was staying with his girlfriend, had a history of heavy smoking, but the medical examiner's office said it didn't know if that related to his death.
