Check out new parks Web site

The Sugar Grove Park District has recently upgraded its Web site. The new and improved site can be found at www.sgparks.org.

"We recognized a need for an upgrade," said Executive Director Greg Repede. "We've only been a park district since 2003 so in a sense we're just getting started. We had a kind-of 'do it yourself' Web site before and it was hard to keep it updated. Joanne Becker is responsible for working with the Web designers and she did a tremendous job."

The Web site includes updated information on parks, fields, bike trails and pathways. A new feature is "News Café," which offers information on special events. For example, residents can learn about the opportunity to see the Bulls play the Denver Nuggets at 7 p.m. Feb. 22. A cost of $48 includes a ticket to the game and bus transportation. The chartered bus will leave from outside the park district office at 61 Main St. at 5 p.m. Registration is due by Jan. 18.

The park district brochure is mailed to residents three times a year, and the brochure is available in PDF format on the Web site.

Repede said the park district will continue to grow and add new programs. Online registration is a definite goal.

A true citizen of the year

Beverly Holmes Hughes, director of the Sugar Grove library and a tireless community volunteer, took exception to our end-of-the-year report that stated that Joe Wolf was awarded the 2007 citizen of the year "perhaps as a consolation prize for being ousted from the village board during the April election …"

"Neither Joe nor the citizen of the year award deserve the negative connotation implied by this statement," Hughes wrote in an e-mail to the Daily Herald. "It was the committee opinion that he deserved this recognition based on his years of service and commitment to the community."

We reported the award ceremony with a page one story the next day, July 28, and Wolf's accomplishments were outlined in the article.

Our end-of-the-year analysis did not mean to imply the Sugar Grove citizen of the year recognition isn't a worthwhile award. And Wolf is a deserving recipient.

At the library

Students of all ages who have a valid Town and County Library card will be able to select a prize offered by the Chicago Wolves professional hockey team through the "Read to Succeed" program which ends Feb. 2. The library is at 320 E. North St. in Elburn.

Students who use a log sheet (provided by the Chicago Wolves) to document that they read for a total of 3 hours and 20 minutes can choose from an array of prizes. Prizes include tickets to a Wolves game, Wolves caps, T-shirts, book bags and notebooks. There is even a Wolves toy ice machine.

Children can also meet "Skates," the Wolves mascot, as well as players from the Burlington Central High School hockey team at an ice cream bash at 4 p.m. Jan. 31.

The Wolves are in the American Hockey League and play home games at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont.
