Briefs: Motorola settles patent disputes

SCHAUMBURG -- Motorola Inc. and Metrologic Instruments Inc. announced Monday they have reached an agreement that settles all outstanding patent infringement disputes between the two companies. Since 2002, the two have engaged in a number of patent disputes involving barcode scanning and mobile computing. The settlement calls for a patent cross-license in those respective fields. Blackwood, N.J.-based Metrologic is a supplier of data capture and collection hardware and software.

Jeju Air orders five Boeing 737s

CHICAGO -- South Korea's Jeju Air has ordered five narrowbody 737 passenger planes to accommodate future growth, Boeing Co. said Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Chicago-based Boeing, which assembles its 737s south of Seattle, said the new 737-800s are worth $370 million at list prices, though customers typically negotiate steep discounts. To date, Boeing has won more than 4,400 orders for 737s.

Sept. 11 site delay to cost millions

NEW YORK -- The owner of the World Trade Center site said Monday it is at least a month behind on a deadline to turn over part of the site to a private developer and will pay at least $9 million in fines. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had a Tuesday deadline to excavate foundations for two of five planned office towers at the site and turn the land over to private developer Larry Silverstein. It has to pay Silverstein $300,000 for every day it is late.

Pakistan exchange has record drop

KARACHI, Pakistan -- Pakistani stocks suffered their biggest one-day loss ever Monday, the first day of trading following last week's assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto. The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index plunged 694.92 points, or 4.7 percent, to 14,077.16, its largest single-day loss in points and percentage. Three days of mourning had halted trading after Bhutto's assassination Thursday.
