Advice to follow in wake of tragic death

The tragic death of astronaut Dan Tani's mother Rose at a railroad crossing reminded this senior citizen of a sound bit of advice he once got as a teenager from a driving instructor:

"Kid. Never drive through a blind spot. Keep your foot on the brake and stop, look and listen carefully before proceeding on."
