Lions welcome guest from Ziegler's

The Elgin Lions Club will have its dinner monthly meeting on Jan. 8 at the Elgin Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road. The meeting starts at 6:15 p.m. with guest speaker David Ziegler of Ziegler's Ace Hardware, a family-owned Elgin business. Dinner is $15 per person. Church hosts drive for New Orleans

Members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee need help gathering much-needed items for their Gulf Coast mission trip to New Orleans. On Jan. 11, 20 members and friends are traveling to New Orleans to help rebuild homes located in New Orleans' Ninth Ward.

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is serving as many as 7,500 people each day and needs the following items: dry cereal and breakfast food, canned meats, canned fruit and canned vegetables, hearty canned soups, dry beans/pasta, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.

People can drop off donated items on Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church 310 E. Main St. in East Dundee. Drive-through drop-off points will be marked so that contributors need not exit their cars. On Jan. 6, drop-offs will be located on the east side of Immanuel's School building from 9 to 10 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m.

Here's how to enter snapshot contest

Our Snapshots contest is open to amateur photographers of all ages in Kane and McHenry counties.

Photos will be judged by our staff photographers who will select three winners for publication each week. Once a month, a grand-prize winner will receive a prize from The Frame Shop in East Dundee.

To enter, send your photos in a digital JPEG format, sized at two megabytes if possible (minimum size 300 dpi), to foxcontest@dailyherald.com. Put "photo contest" in the subject line. Include your name, phone number and address. Please also include information about where the photo was taken and who or what was in the picture.

Photos received by 5 p.m. on Mondays will be considered for Saturday publication. Only one photo a week per photographer, but you can enter as many weeks as you'd like.
