Writing contest: Students in third through 12th grade can submit an essay about a book that made a difference in their lives to the Friends of the Grayslake Library Writing Contest for the chance to win one of 15 cash prizes totaling $2,000. There are separate categories for students in five different age groups: third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth, high school freshmen and sophomores and high school juniors and seniors.

In each category, the first place prize is $250, second place is $100 and third place $50. Every participant will be awarded an honorable mention ribbon or certificate. Entries must be dropped off at the library or postmarked by Jan. 15. Entry forms and complete rules will be available on the library's Web site, www.grayslake.info.
