Senators trip Sabres; Wings shut out Blues

Dany Heatley had a goal and 2 assists, Martin Gerber made 29 saves and the Ottawa Senators beat the host Buffalo Sabres 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Wade Redden added a goal and assist for the Senators, who scored three times in the second period.

Antoine Vermette, Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson also scored for Ottawa, which has won two straight and eight of its last 10.

Red Wings 5, Blues 0: Chris Osgood stopped 20 shots for his 45th career shutout, leading visiting Detroit to a victory over St. Louis.

Center Valtteri Filppula scored twice to pace the Red Wings, who won for the fifth time in their last six games and improved to 27-7-3 overall.

Capitals 3, Lightning 2: Matt Bradley scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:53 left, and host Washington ended a three-game skid by beating Tampa Bay.

David Steckel had a goal and two assists for the Capitals, and Vincent Lecavalier scored both Tampa Bay goals.

Islanders 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT): Mike Comrie scored with 9.6 seconds left in overtime, Wade Dubielewicz made 22 saves in relief of injured Rick DiPietro, and New York spoiled former Islander Jason Blake's return by beating visiting Toronto.

Blake spent parts of six seasons with the Islanders before signing with Toronto during the summer.

Rangers 4, Hurricanes 2: Jaromir Jagr scored twice to end a goal-scoring slump, and Brendan Shanahan set up a pair of third-period power-play goals to help New York beat visiting Carolina.

Chris Drury and Dan Girardi also scored for the Rangers, who snapped a three-game losing streak, winning for only the third time in the last 11 games.

Blue Jackets 2, Thrashers 0: Pascal Leclaire made 21 saves for his league-leading seventh shutout and host Columbus snapped Atlanta's four-game winning streak.

Stars 8, Wild 3: Brenden Morrow had 2 goals, Mike Ribeiro matched a career high with his 20th goal and added 2 assists, and host Dallas routed Minnesota.

The Stars' Mike Modano extended his goal-scoring record for U.S.-born players with the 518th of his career.
