Seabrook gives Hawks big-time defensive play

The Blackhawks might not have a No. 1 defenseman on paper, but Brent Seabrook has played like one the last week.

Seabrook has wanted more power play time and has been getting it.

"He's played great and that's why he playing the power play, too," said coach Denis Savard. "He's picked up his game big."

Savard has searched for point men to play on the power play in the absence of the injured Jason Williams. He has finally turned to Seabrook, who was a top offensive defenseman in juniors after the Hawks drafted him 14th overall in 2003.

"I think I can help the team there," Seabrook said. "I was just waiting for an opportunity and I'm trying to make the best of it."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Seabrook also has stepped up his game physically.

Injury report: The Hawks likely will announce today the extent of the injuries suffered by Dave Bolland and Martin Havlat last weekend.

Bolland broke a finger in Sunday's win over the Oilers and likely will miss at least the next four weeks.

Havlat injured his groin in Saturday's win at Ottawa and is probably looking at a few weeks on the shelf.

"Injuries are a factor, but I know for a fact we're going to keep playing lie we have," Denis Savard said. I have no doubt in my mind."

Listen up: Chairman Rocky Wirtz, president John McDonough and general manager Dale Tallon will take calls from listeners on WSCR 670-AM tonight from 6-7:20 p.m. The Hawks are encouraging suggestions from fans.
