Another day, another 2 OT win for St. Charles N.
Trailing by 13 points in the fourth quarter, things didn't appear too promising for St. Charles North.
Especially considering that less than 12 hours earlier, the North Stars were extended to double overtime before defeating Elgin 84-72.
But after staging a furious 15-5 rally over the final 3:07 of regulation to tie the game at 70, the North Stars apparently found their "comfort zone" -- as in another double-overtime game.
St. Charles North (4-7) enjoyed a 12-4 surge in the second 4-minute extra session to outlast Woodstock (2-7) 91-83 during Saturday morning's opening round of the 12th annual Jacobs Holiday Basketball Tournament in Algonquin.
"Just getting into overtime was a real testament to our kids battling and the character they have," said North Stars coach Tom Poulin. "At halftime, we talked about giving it everything we had for 16 minutes -- and they gave us that."
And then some.
A pair of fourth-quarter 3-point baskets by Zach Hirsch (18 points) keyed the regulation run that enabled the North Stars to take a 70-69 lead with 41 seconds left.
Derek Brown, who led the Blue Streaks with 28 points, split a pair of free throws with 31 seconds remaining to force the first overtime, and then nailed a 30-foot jumper at the buzzer to send the game into a second extra period -- tied at 79.
"They can shoot the rock," North Stars junior guard/forward Jonathon DeMoss said of the Blue Streaks, who shot 54 percent from the field during regulation, including 8 of 16 from beyond the 3-point arc. "That is probably the best shooting team we've played all year."
Fortunately for the North Stars, DeMoss can also "shoot the rock."
While the rest of his teammates struggled through a 12-for-29 performance at the free-throw line, DeMoss was perfect on all 10 of his foul shots -- including 6 in the first overtime -- on the way to a game-high 29 points.
"Before last night's game (vs. Elgin), we were shooting 37 percent from the free-throw line as a team," said Poulin. "And we shoot 100 of them every day in practice."
"We're not a bad free-throw shooting team, but it's contagious right now," added DeMoss. "We'll be OK."
Nick Neari, who finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 8 steals and 8 assists, put the North Stars in front for good at 81-79 on a short baseline jumper with 2:20 left in the second OT.
Tim Janeway added 15 points and 7 rebounds for the North Stars, who take on Prairie Ridge Wednesday afternoon.
"I told those guys I'm proud to say I'm their coach," said Poulin. "The last two nights, I can't ask for anything more of them. And it made extra special that (Poulin's former high school coach at St. Charles) Ron Johnson was here watching the game."
Ben Wetherbee tallied 18 points for the Blue Streaks, who canned 10 3-point baskets.
"We just don't have the experience yet to be able to control the game late," said Woodstock coach Joe Conroy. "We don't have the confidence in one another to execute down the stretch."
