Workers must learn to speak English

No, Reuben Navarrette, speaking only English is not discriminatory in the case you cited. (Daily Herald, Sept. 9). The Salvation Army told people they had a year to learn English or lose their jobs. They didn't learn English (you know, the language of the United States) so they lost their jobs. They weren't fired for speaking their language on breaks. They were fired for not being able -- no, change that to not being bothered -- to learn English in order to wait on customers.

We in the United States speak English. In Mexico, they speak Spanish; in France they speak French. If you expect to get a job here, than I guess you better be able to speak our language.

I'm waiting for Navarrette's next column on PSAT tests having to be taken in English -- something that should be a given.
