Remark nets suspension
A St. Charles East High School senior will be suspended, but not criminally charged, for telling friends he was "going to come to school and hurt some kids," District 303 officials said Friday. Police interviewed the boy at his home Thursday and determined the comment to be nothing more than a "stupid remark," Superintendent Don Schlomann said. The district notified parents of the incident through an emergency telephone blast Friday after Schlomann said it "took on a life of its own" with Web site postings. Schlomann said the boy also mentioned possessing guns, but that turned out not to be the case. The incident did not affect classes at East.

Buckle up in West Chicago
West Chicago police will begin a new seat belt enforcement crackdown Monday. The special focus will continue through Jan. 1. The effort is designed to make roadways safer by enforcing seat belt violations and educating the public on seat belt safety and awareness. It follows a similar campaign that ran in November, which resulted in 220 citations. The effort is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation that allows the city to pay officers to provide additional traffic enforcement. For more information about the program or seat belt safety, call (630) 293-2222.
