Yohn, Rahn have career scoring nights

Sometimes father really knows best.

St. Edward guard Katie Yohn's father told her to make sure that she had her feet squared up to the basket when she shot.

The advice proved valuable as Yohn hit 5 straight 3-pointers during her 28-point first half Friday night in Elgin. The junior finished with a career-high 35 points as St. Edward held off visiting Marian Central 55-52 in Suburban Catholic Conference play. Her pervious career high was 28 points.

"The past couple of games, my shot's been off," said Yohn who added 10 rebounds and 4 assists. "I wanted to be confident in my shot. I talk to my dad, he told me to keep my feet square. I helped a lot."

Despite Yohn's efforts, a season-high 29 turnovers allowed Marian Central back into the game. St. Edward (6-1, 2-0) turned the ball over 5 times in its first 6 possessions of the second half, which allowed the Hurricanes (4-3, 1-1) to cut a 34-26 halftime lead into a 36-31 game in the first 1:43 of the third quarter.

"This was unusual for us tonight," St. Edward coach Michele Dawson said. "Marian put a lot of pressure on us and we didn't handle it very well."

Marian Central sophomore point guard Devon Medina stuck to Yohn like Elmer's in the second half, which also stalled the Green Wave's offense.

St. Edward scored just 8 points in the third quarter, with Yohn (5 steals) scoring her lone bucket of the period off a breakaway steal. After going 7 of 10 in the first half, the junior was 2 of 2 in the second half.

"Our plan in the second half was to shut out (Yohn)," Medina said. "After that first half, we did a pretty good job of it. Coming into the game we knew she could shoot. It was quite an accomplishment stopping her (in the second half)."

Medina's offense also helped the Hurricanes get back into the game late. After Marian Central went 1 of its first 14 three-point attempts, Medina (11 points, 3 steals, 3 assists) connected twice in the fourth quarter. The second, which was the Hurricanes fifth-straight bucket, gave Marian Central a 50-49 lead. The lead was the first time St. Edward trailed since trailing 2-0.

Yohn quickly secured the lead back for the Green Wave when she converted both shots of a 1-and-1 with 2:47 left. She then made the front end of a 1-and-1 46 seconds later putting St. Edward up by 3. She finished the game 12 of 14 from the foul line.

Katherine Sharp (14 points, 3 steals) brought Marian Central within in 53-52 on the next trip down the floor, but it would be the last time the Hurricanes would score.

Jacobs 69, CL Central 29: Virtually unstoppable, senior guard Markie Rahn accounted for half of Jacobs' offense recording 34 points to lead the Golden Eagles in this Fox Valley Conference crossover victory.

The overall tally marks Rahn's career-high.

Nailing four 3-pointers, Rahn single-handedly outscored the opponent in three consecutive quarters, nabbing 10 first-quarter points and 18 second-quarter points before adding 6 more in the third quarter.

Stephanie Leddy added 9 points for the Golden Eagles (5-4) and Katy Cook contributed with 8 points.

Cary-Grove 56, Johnsburg 43: Cary-Grove senior standout Danielle Smith didn't score a point.

It didn't matter. The rest of the Trojans picked up the slack.

Spearheaded by a 14-0 run to end the first half, the Trojans were able to cruise past Johnsburg 56-43 in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game in Cary Friday night.

"They shut down Danielle, but we have too many other good players," said Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert. "We did a great job as a team. In the first half, we just clicked on all cylinders. We played great defense tonight. You have to have the horses to play good team defense and we do. I think our defense tired them out."

Johnsburg (4-5) stayed right with the Trojans for most of the first half.

After a long 3-pointer by Danielle Slivka, the Skyhawks (4-5) pulled within 19-14 with 4:18 remaining before intermission. But those would be the last points of the half for Johnsburg.

The Trojans (7-1) put on a clinic the rest of the half. Liz Bart nailed a pair of 3-pointers, Claire Jakubicek connected from beyond the arc while Jamie Kuhl scored 5 points on a pair of putbacks and 1 of 2 from the free throw line. The Trojans, who scored the final 14 points of the half, made their last 5 shots and led 33-14 after 16 minutes.

Cary-Grove, which made 7 of 9 from the field in the second quarter for a sizzling 77 percent, made 13 of 21 from the field in the first half for 62 percent. The Trojans' teamwork was evident with 10 assists. Kuhl, Jill Cole, Kelly Koch and Tori Sandstrom dealt out 2 assists apiece. Cary-Grove out-rebounded the Skyhawks 20-8 in the first half.

"We forgot to get off the bus," said Johnsburg coach Mike Toussaint. "They got all the offensive rebounds and the second chances. They got every loose ball and were much more physical than us. We panicked and lacked leadership. I was not happy at halftime."

Johnsburg played a much better second half and climbed within 9 at 49-40 on a 3-pointer by Melissa Dixon with 1:08 left. But Johnsburg couldn't get any closer. Cary-Grove sealed the win by connecting on 7 of 8 from the free throw line in the final minute.

Bart made 3 of 4 while Cole and Meg Straumann each made 2 of 2 as the Trojans won by 13.

Kuhl paced the Trojans with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists.

"I was able to find the openings and I was able to get some good shots," said Kuhl. "We have so many weapons and played great as a team. We work so well together. It was a lot of fun tonight."

Rebecca Staveteig led Johnsburg with 13 while Michelle McDonald scored 12 with 6 boards.
