Pirates' Modic keeps on rolling
It only takes one meet to totally change the standings -- both individual and team -- in Mid-Suburban League girls bowling.
On Thursday, the individual story was Palatine junior Amy Modic.
Modic bowled a 300 game earlier this season to join Hoffman Estates' Amanda and Natalie Cortese as the only league bowlers to throw a perfect game. This time she bowled a team-high 674 (214, 224, 236) to help the Pirates bowl a 2,826.
That gave Modic's team a 9-0 victory over Fremd and moved the league contender from seventh to sixth place in a conference where moving up among the leaders is extremely difficult.
"I'm comfortable right now," said Modic, who moved from 11th in the MSL to ninth with a 202.66 average. "I'm shooting 600, but seven (hundred) or eight (hundred) would be nice.
"Right now I'm trying to be consistent. Here and there I bowl a 600, but I'm not being consistent."
The conditions were good at times and not so good at others.
"Of course every game there's going to be some adjustments and that's what I do," Modic said. "I can tell how the ball is going to react."
Natalie Cortese bowled a league-high 721 (246, 279, 196) to lead the Hawks to yet another 9-0 triumph. That left first-place Schaumburg and Hoffman as the only two teams which haven't lost a point.
Natalie Cortese moved up from third to second place with a 219.88 average, while Amanda threw a 595 (216, 193, 186) to remain in first place with a 220.33 average.
Prospect's 9-0 win over Wheeling kept the Knights in third place while Conant's 7-2 victory over Hersey moved Conant up one place to fourth and dropped Hersey down one place to fifth.
For Hersey, Shauna Pauly threw a 587 (227, 204, 156), dropping down to sixth place, one place down than when the meet began.
Moving up to fifth was Schaumburg's Samantha Kelly, whose 609 (181, 244, 184) moved her into the fifth spot with a 208.28 average.
