Heartland Voices offers holiday music for all

Heartland Voices offers a series of concerts that will appeal to the whole family.

Ring in the holidays with "Home is Where the Heart Is," festive concerts filled with holiday music for the entire family, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, 216 E. Highland Ave. Elgin.

Nothing evokes the holiday spirit more than the voices of children.

Starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, the annual Family Holiday Concert once again features the talents of the Elgin Children's Chorus Intermezzo Choir, and the Clare Woods Academy Choir.

Heartland Voices and the children's choirs will perform festive music for the season, with a special finale uniting all three ensembles and celebrating diversity and fellowship.

The annual Holiday Charity Drive will benefit the Little Angels of Elgin. For the afternoon concert, all children bringing personal-care products, coloring books and drawing supplies for children will be admitted free of charge.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Heartland Voices invites everyone to experience the joy and peace of the holiday season at their traditional candlelight concert in the same location, surrounded by the warmth and beauty of the sanctuary of the church.

This evening will be a special blend of the old and the new in celebration of the spirit of the holiday season, and features a special guest, harpist Jennifer Keller. Come prepared to join in a sing-along of many seasonal favorites.

Tickets for the afternoon family concert are $10, $8 for students and seniors, $5 for children under age 12. Evening concert tickets are $18, $15 for seniors and students, $10 for children, age 12 and younger. For tickets, call (847) 429-9486, or visit www.heartlandvoices.org.

Heartland Voices continues its season with "3 Cool Dudes" at 7:30 p.m. March 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Elgin, and at 7 p.m. March 16 at St. Marcelline Catholic Church, 822 S. Springinsguth Road in Schaumburg.

Celebrate three musical giants with J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and cantata, "Christ lag in Todesbanden"; G.F. Handel's great coronation anthem, "Zadok the Priest"; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's melodious Vesparae Solennes de Confessore. The Metropolis Orchestra is the special guest.

On May 17, celebrate the spirit of the Americas with "From Colombia To Canada -- Eh!" the final concert of Heartland Voices ninth season. This concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. May 17 in the Blizzard Theatre at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive; and at 7 p.m. June 1 at St. Marcelline. Rick Kogan of WGN-AM 720 Radio will narrate Randall Thompson's "Testament of Freedom." Another highlight will be the world premiere of Heartland Voices' work commissioned by Barrington's Tim Takach. Join the group for this memorable conclusion to their ninth season.

Heartland Voices, a nonprofit organization, has First Community Bank of Elgin as the sponsor for its gala and benefit and the Daily Herald as its season media sponsor. The season is sponsored in part through grants from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Heartland Voices consists of professional and professionally trained singers from the greater Chicago area committed to excellence in choral performance. The group is led by John G. Slawson, professor of music and director of choral studies at Elgin Community College, accompanied by Paul Satre, professor of music at the School of Music at Trinity International University and principal organist at the Moody Church of Chicago.
