Green's OT goal wins for Capitals

Mike Green scored 3:41 into overtime after posting 2 assists in regulation, Joe Motzko had his first 2 goals of the season, and the host Washington Capitals beat the New York Rangers 5-4 Wednesday night.

The winning goal came after New York's Brendan Shanahan stumbled and fell to the ice in the Capitals' zone, allowing Brooks Laich to steal the puck and head the other way on an odd-man rush.

That blunder ruined a good night for Shanahan, who had a goal and 2 assists. Martin Straka scored twice for New York, and Jaromir Jagr had an assist.

It was quite a display of offense from two of the four lowest-scoring teams in the 30-club NHL, and the result gave Washington its first three-game home winning streak. The last-in-the-league Capitals also have won four of five overall.

Sabres 5, Islanders 3: Ales Kotalik had a goal and assist, Ryan Miller made 28 saves, and host Buffalo scored 3 goals in the second period to beat the New York Islanders. Nolan Pratt, Toni Lydman, Derek Roy and Jochen Hecht also scored for the Sabres.

Bruins 5, Thrashers 3: Milan Lucic scored the go-ahead goal off a rebound with 3:47 remaining, and Alex Auld won his third straight start for Boston, beating host Atlanta. Mark Recchi scored twice in his first game with the Thrashers.

Blue Jackets 4, Avalanche 1: Fredrik Norrena stopped 15 shots, and host Columbus relied on defense to beat Colorado. It was the second time in a week the Blue Jackets defeated the Avalanche, a first for the franchise that was 2-21-2 against Colorado before the back-to-back wins.

Senators 6, Hurricanes 0: Dany Heatley had 2 goals and an assist, leading Ottawa to a rout of host Carolina. Ray Emery and Martin Gerber teamed to post Ottawa's second shutout of the season.
