Crystal Lake man indicted for murder

A Crystal Lake man turned himself in Wednesday evening to police after a McHenry County grand jury indicted him today for first-degree murder in the death of a man fatally injured three months ago in what police called an unprovoked attack.

The indictment alleges Dustin Goy, 30, caused fatal injuries to Anthony Carlsen during a Sept. 9 altercation outside a tavern near downtown Crystal Lake.

Carlsen, 45, died as a result of head injuries one week after the incident, authorities said.

The indictment does not accuse Goy of intentionally killing the Crystal Lake man, but alleges he punched Carlsen, causing his death.

"We're alleging the defendant committed an act knowing there was a probability of great bodily harm or death," said Nichole Owens, criminal chief for the McHenry County state's attorney.

After turning himself in Goy was transferred to the McHenry County jail where he is being held on $75,000 bail..

His attorney, Todd Cohen, was not available for comment, but was expected to file for a reduction of bond later this week.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 9 as both men were leaving The Cottage Tavern. Witnesses said Goy struck Carlsen after the two men exchanged words outside the tavern.

There is no evidence, police said, that the two men had quarreled previously inside the bar.

If convicted of the first-degree murder charge, Goy could face between 20 and 60 years in prison. He also was indicted today for aggravated battery, a felony punishable by two to five years behind bars.
