Local teachers share experiences
Two local teachers have been instrumental in educating students in Antarctic research.
Betty Trummel of Crystal Lake has traveled to Antarctica repeatedly to relate the work going on there first-hand.
Trummel teaches fourth grade at Husmann Elementary School in Crystal Lake, and just this week traveled to San Francisco to give a presentation on Antarctic research to the American Geophysical Union.
A blog of her experience with ANDRILL last year is at Betty's blog.
Louise Huffman of Naperville is the Education and Public Outreach Coordinator for the Antarctic drilling project.
Huffman retired this summer from Kennedy Junior High School in Naperville after 34 years of teaching.
She traveled to Antarctica this fall where among other things she helped launch a weather balloon for predicting weather without radar, and took part in an unplanned 24-hour outdoor adventure when a scheduled helicopter pickup was canceled due to weather.
Her blog is Andrill Arise.
She will return to Naperville soon and will again organize educational seminars for teachers in the area.
