Briefs: Charges in fraud scheme

Two former Bolingbrook officials and five small business owners were charged Friday with engaging in a $400,000 fraud scheme in which the public works department officials got cash, gifts and services in return for approving false and inflated invoices to the village from the businesses, authorities said. Charges include fraud and federal income tax offenses. Bolingbrook police and the Will County state's attorney's office began the investigation, which later was brought to federal officials. Donald Ralls, 62, of Aurora and John Schwab, 43, of Sandwich are the former public works officials. Others charged include: Alan Guzzino, 59, of Bolingbrook; David Donaldson, 54, of Hanover Park; Gary Lindesmith, 48, of Lowell, Ind.; Murteza Gazaferi, 37, of Lemont; and Ahmet Rusid, 57, of Morris. The seven will be ordered to appear later for arraignment in U.S. District Court.

Aurora police towing cars

Aurora police are towing "snowbound" vehicles, enforcing a city ordinance that states cars must be moved at least every 48 hours or the owner risks having them towed. Through mid-morning Friday, more than 50 cars had been towed after being found "snowbound" from Tuesday's snowfall. The cars must be moved so plows can complete their work, police say. With more snow expected, police are reminding people to move their cars from streets and alleys. The vehicles also are eyesores to the neighborhood, police say.

Lombard Jubilee

Head into downtown Lombard today for the village's Jinglebell Jubilee festivities. Activities include a visit with Santa, Puffer Belly train rides, horse-drawn carriage rides, a giant gingerbread house, a magical array of animated light displays and decorated trees, refreshments and more. Carollers will add atmosphere at the Helen Plum Library, school musicians will perform and tours will be offered at the nearby historical Victorian cottage. Santa is expected about 5:15 p.m. for the annual Lilacia Park tree lighting at 6 p.m. This year the Lombard Park District will be collecting mittens, winter hats and clothing for the needy.
