Jacobs 77, Johnsburg 49

Johnsburg never had a chance.

Jumping off to a 13-3 lead and steadily increasing its advantage, Jacobs was impressive in pounding Johnsburg 77-49 in a Fox Valley Conference boys basketball crossover game in Algonquin Friday night.

"We had a real good flow early," said Jim Hinkle. "We got the game played at our tempo and played pretty solid basketball for 32 minutes.

It was senior Northern Iowa recruit John Moran who ignited the Golden Eagles early. With 9 points including a 3-pointer along with 2 assists, Moran was the reason Jacobs catapulted to an early 10-point cushion.

John Moran, who is now just 9 points from breaking the school career scoring record, was magical in scoring 21 points with 13 assists, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. He was 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

"John Moran is special," said Hinkle. "There isn't much else I can say. He plays both ends hard and never takes a possession off. He is unselfish sometimes to a fault."

The Golden Eagles also played well at the defensive end. Hinkle used both Conrad Krutwig and Tim Moran to guard 6-fooot-7 Johnsburg sophomore center C.J. Fiedorowicz. The Jacobs duo held Fiedorowicz (3 of 10 from the floor) to 9 points in the first half.

"Fiedorowicz is a very talented offensive player, but Conrad and Tim did a great job on him," said Hinkle. "They made Fiedorowicz work for everything he got. They were both very active defensively."

Holding a 35-25 lead at halftime, Jacobs (5-1) ran the Skyhawks (4-3) out of the gym in the third quarter.

Making 6 of its first 8 shots in the quarter, Jacobs started the half with a 16-3 run.

John Moran scored 8 while Tim Moran and Krutwig scored 4 each as Jacobs enjoyed a 51-28 advantage with 2:53 left in the quarter.

Aided by red-hot 11-for-15 shooting from the field (73 percent), Jacobs outscored Johnsburg 27-14 in the quarter and led 62-39 heading into the final 8 minutes of play.

Tim Moran added 16 points with 10 rebounds for the winners.

"Johnsburg is a younger and inexperienced team so it was important for us to start fast," said Tim Moran. "Our defense got our offense going, Our press was really working and we got some easy layups.

Krutwig added 14 points with 9 boards for the Golden Eagles.

Fiedorowicz led Johnsburg with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Dombroski tallied 15 points for the Skyhawks.
