Driscoll 62, Marmion 41
Driscoll is much more than a one-man team, even though the Highlanders nearly beat Marmion Friday with their main guy alone.
The Cadets had no answer for 6-foot-10 senior Jake Lindfors. The Albany-bound center scored 32 points on 17 shots in Driscoll's 62-41 victory in Aurora.
Lindfors made 9 of his 17 field goal attempts, including a 3-pointer, and 13 of 16 free throws.
He nearly outscored Marmion by himself in the first half, 18-20. He also was about even with the Cadets when his coach Nick Latorre pulled him with 1:27 to play and his 32 points just behind Marmion's 35.
"I don't want to say it was a quiet 32 but it was an efficient 32," Latorre said. "He didn't take many bad shots. I thought he had an efficient night on the offensive end."
Lindfors scored 42 points earlier this year against Montini. Marmion came out in a 1-3-1 but the Highlanders adjusted.
"We expected them to play man but I thought we responded to it very well," Lindfors said. "We moved the ball, found the open man. I thought we played against it very well.
"My team helped me so much. They were very unselfish to me."
Marmion (4-1, 1-1) lost for the first time this year, which is also the first loss for first-year coach and former DePaul guard Rashon Burno.
The Cadets turned the ball over 21 times, shot 29 percent from the field (13 of 44) and didn't have a player reach double figures.
"I think the kids really tried too hard," Burno said. "They played outside their body. It's a learning experience. It's going to be ups and downs.
"He's (Lindfors) a good player, good high school player. We take our hats off."
Driscoll (4-2, 1-0) played its first game with a full squad of football players, which includes starters David Schwabe and Austin Baker and nearly all its bench. It also was their first game in two weeks.
"Our defensive effort was good and our intensity was good," Latorre said. "When you don't play for two weeks it can either go like tonight, or sometimes you don't know how to handle it. The kids came out and competed like they wanted to play against somebody else besides their teammates."
Schwabe was the only player besides Lindfors in double figures with 12 points. Sean Fichtel and Byrce Emory led Marmion with 9 and 8 points, respectively.
The Cadets entered the season with just 16 points returning from last year. Marmion struggled to score most of the night, especially in the middle two quarters when it scored 13 points on 4-of-20 shooting with 12 turnovers.
Driscoll extended its lead from 14-12 to 42-25 over that stretch.
"Tonight we witnessed a really, really good program," Burno said. "Those guys are the cream of the crop of the conference. We're just trying to get where they are."
