Capannari Ice Cream chef's vanilla wins top prize

Capannari Ice Cream announced that ice cream chef, Jim Capannari, has won top honors for his vanilla ice cream.

Capannari Ice Cream is at 10 S. Pine St. in Mount Prospect. The retail business closes for the winter but continues to service Corporate Catering.

John MacGregor, head of Clemson University's Dairy department, has bestowed a blue ribbon upon Capannari's.

The ice cream is analyzed for 35 different characteristics, ranging from texture and body to color and taste.

Capannari was honored at the National Ice Cream Retailers Association annual convention in San Antonio last month.

"I am proud I won for our vanilla, as it doesn't allow for any masking," said Jim Capannari in a statement. "Vanilla is the foundation for all other flavors; if you get that one right, the rest of your flavors will follow suit."

Capannari has been making ice cream in his shop since 2001 and has become known for his unique, gourmet, high-end flavors.

He was honored this summer for his chocolate, which was named as "Best Classic Ice Cream" in Chicago by TimeOut Chicago.

Next year's calendars: The Mount Prospect Historical Society has released its second annual calendar and this one features historic pictures of automobiles.

Mount Prospect has a long love affair with cars, from William Busse opening one of the first Buick dealerships in the state to the continuing downtown car shows.

This calendar features everything from a 1936 police chase to a Schlitz beer delivery truck from Kruse's Tavern.

The new calendars are $10, which helps to support the Mount Prospect Historical Society, and are available at the historical society, the public library, Norway General Store and Cycle Shop, Neat 'N Cool Gifts, Busse Automotive, and Keefer's Pharmacy.

New appointments: Prospect Heights City Council recently appointed Kevin Lee, Peter DeVries, Steve Roberson and Edward Madden to the city's human relations commission.

The committee is tasked with dealing with any discrimination issues that may come up in the city. The seven-member group meets with issues arise, city officials said.
