Hinsdale Central @ Glenbard West
Hinsdale Central (3-2, 0-1) at Glenbard West (4-3, 0-1)
Both graduated tons of talent from highly successful teams, yet each aims high in the West Suburban Silver despite the inexperience. Each has a star senior -- Northwestern-bound 6-8 John Shurna at Glenbard West, 6-4 guard Chris Chana at Hinsdale Central -- but Chana had a high ankle sprain in the third game and hasn't seen the court since. Not coincidentally the Red Devils lost their two games without him, to Lyons Twp. and WW South. Red Devils coach Ed Lynch seeks consistency and identity from a group that includes sophomore point guard John Whitelaw, post player Clay Foster and senior forward Rich Brennan. Shurna had his own injury, a jammed thumb that held him out of the Hilltoppers' first three games and still bugs him. He's averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds since, aided by junior point guard Bryant Venson, 260-pound post Chris Watt and Bryan Emmanuel, averaging 7.6 rebounds off the bench. First-year varsity coach Tim Hoder was pleased to hold Oak Park to 1 of 9 on 3-point shots, but would have liked more offense in a 45-26 loss on Nov. 30. Of note: Hoder's predecessor, Lee Maciejewski, returns to Biester Gymnasium as a Hinsdale Central assistant.
