Teens can learn about, explore outdoors at winter camp
Camp isn't just for summer anymore.
This winter, teens can explore the great outdoors over winter break at McHenry County Conservation District's Extreme Explorations Winter Camp, Jan. 2-4 at Wiedrich Education Center, 6316 Harts Road in Glacial Park.
"There are so many great winter activities that Glacial Park has to offer," said Kim Caldwell, education program coordinator for McHenry County Conservation District.
"The camp gives students a chance to have fun outdoors and learn how to stay safe in the harsh winter elements."
In this interactive camp, teens will have a chance to cure their cabin fever while learning valuable outdoor survival skills such as starting a fire, using a GPS unit to navigate during a hike, and living off the land in the winter.
Participants also will play a game that simulates real-life scenarios, in which they will creatively use the materials around them and what they've learned to survive the elements.
A cross-country skiing clinic also will be held if weather permits.
The Extreme Explorations Winter Camp includes a day camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 2, as well as an overnight stay from 5 p.m. Jan. 3 to noon Jan. 4. Teens will either tent camp outdoors or in an indoor facility if temperatures are too cold.
Youth ages 12 to 15 are invited to attend. A registration fee of $40 per person is due at registration, and covers Thursday night dinner and snack, Friday breakfast and snack, a souvenir T-shirt and ski rental.
The registration deadline is Dec. 17.
