Elgin councilman debuts new book:ŒElgin City Councilman Mike Powers' will discuss his new book, "All-American Stories: Elgin Myths and Memories," from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Community Room A.
In the book, Powers covers a number of local stories, including tales of top sport stars from the past such as Rich Hopkins, David Powers, and Flynn Robinson from Elgin High School.
"Mike's book is an often poignant portrait of an earlier Elgin. The author came of age during the 1960s and '70s. Mike's memories are an imaginative treasure to those who hold Elgin near and dear to their hearts," said George Rawlinson, owner of State Street Publishing, the firm that will be pressing "Memories."
Middle School Book Club:ŒThe Middle School Book Club meets from 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 12. Seventh- and eighth-graders will discuss three books at the December meeting: "Define Normal" by JulieAnne Peters, "Code Talker" by Joseph Bruchac, and "The Bully" (part of the Bluford series) by Paul Langan.
Read one or all three. Attendees will also make an art project that ties in with one of the books. Ask reading teachers about extra credit for attending the event.
Homeschooled students are welcome. Registration is under way.
Contemporary Fiction Book Group:ŒThe Contemporary Fiction Book Group focuses on fiction published within the last 20 years. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 in the second floor conference room.
Discussed will be "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk, where a poet visits Kars, a small Turkish town where Western ideas and radical Islam collide.

Volunteens:ŒVolunteens are student volunteers in seventh- through tenth-grade in the Gail Borden Public Library Youth Center. They work one hour per week and do a variety of tasks, such as the laminator and die-cut machines.
Sessions fill up quickly, so plan ahead to complete a required number of hours. The next session begins the week of Jan. 14. Students have three time slots to choose from: 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays, 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
