ADOPT to hold Cookie Walk, open house Saturday

Eat a cookie, save a cat or dog.

Don't worry about the fat grams or calories. Just savor the chocolate, the sprinkles, the powdered sugar, the rich buttery goodness and the knowledge that you're defying good nutrition for a good cause.

It's almost that simple when it comes to Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment's first cookie walk, set for 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Naperville organization's shelter.

"Cookies will be sold by the pound," said cookie walk organizer Ann Lazarski of Darien.

For $6.99 per pound, shoppers will have a choice of cookies home-baked by volunteers eager to lend their culinary skills to the project.

"We have 25 definite bakers," Lazarski said. "We really want a variety of cookies, as well as some ethnic cookies."

Shoppers also can indulge in complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and cider, she said.

And cookie walk participants won't have to buy cookies without first experiencing their unique taste.

"We also will have samples available for our customers to try," Lazarski said.

Lazarski said cookies will be displayed in the shelter's conference room. Shoppers can walk around, gaze, taste and select a combination of goodies to be wrapped.

Sale proceeds will help the shelter shoulder expenses related to taking in stray and homeless animals, caring for them and putting them up for adoption, Lazarski said.

"One hundred percent of the money will go to the animals," she said.

The 18-year-old humane organization has found homes for more than 20,000 pets since it started, according to the ADOPT Web site.

The morning cookie walk will be followed by an evening event at the shelter, A Home for the Holidays: An ADOPT Celebration, from 7 to 9 p.m. Guests at the open house can tour the shelter, meet the animals, see a holiday lighting ceremony, meet Santa and participate in craft projects.

Tickets for A Home for the Holidays are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and free for children 9 and younger. Admission to the cookie walk is free.
