Burton, Cougars hand RL first loss

Amy Burton and her Vernon Hills' girls basketball team knocked Round Lake from the unbeaten ranks Wednesday night.

Burton posted a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds, as the Cougars came from behind to defeat the visiting Panthers 31-26 in North Suburban Prairie Division action.

Round Lake fell to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the NSC Prairie.

Vernon Hills (3-5, 1-1) won despite being shut out 6-0 in the second quarter. The Cougars trailed 19-15 after three quarters, but outscored the Panthers 16-7 in the final eight minutes.

Alana Coy scored 6 of her 8 points, including a 3-pointer, in the fourth quarter. Burton netted 5 points in the fourth.

Coy also finished with 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Brianna Skeens contributed 6 points and 12 boards for Vernon Hills, and Mallory Feece chipped in 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Brittany Kucia led Round Lake with 8 points. The Panthers received 6 points apiece from Labrenthia Murdock, Jazzamin Rivers and Amber Phillips.

Carmel 53, Joliet Catholic 27: The Corsairs received 10 points apiece from Tiffany Hendrickson, Erin Glogovsky and Lauren Lehocky in their East Suburban Catholic Conference opener.

The game was tied 8-8 before Carmel (5-2) outscored the home team 18-9 in the second quarter. The Corsairs then blanked JCA 13-0 in the third.

Jacobs 39, Grayslake N. 35: Amanda Leon and Elizabeth Phillips each had 10 points for the Knights (3-4), who lost their second game in as many nights.

Antioch 54, R-B 38: Christine Gaborek had 14 points and Lauren Tiffany added 12 for the Sequoits in their nonconference win over the visiting Rockets.

Antioch (2-6) also got 6 points apiece from Andi Potkonjak and Brittany Deem.

Richmond-Burton's Haley Schleibinger led all scorers with 19 points.

Girls gymnastics

Stevenson d. Libertyville: Libertyville's Leah Herchenbach won two events plus the all-around, but Stevenson won the North Suburban Conference meet 139.2 to 128.75.

Herchenbach earned winning scores of 9.15 on uneven parallel bars and 9.1 on floor exercise. Her 35.65 in the all-around edged runner-up Stephanie Wojton (35.25) of Stevenson.

Stevenson's Shana Manning captured first place on balance beam (9.3) and vault (9.2). She was third in the all-around (35.05).

Stevenson's Chelsie Seplowin was second on both bars (8.75) and beam (9.15). Manning took second on floor (9.05).

There was a three-way tie for second on vault with Wojton, Seplowin and Libertyville's Amanda Winn, all of whom scored 9.1.
