Batavia, BG top seeds at Elgin, D-C tourneys

The pairings have been released for the 33rd annual Daily Herald/Pepsi Elgin Holiday Tournament at Chesbrough Field House, and boys basketball fans around the Fox Valley will be treated to a late Christmas present with the final two first-round games on Dec. 26.

At 6:30 p.m., host Elgin will take on Dundee-Crown, with that game to be followed by Larkin taking on top-seeded Batavia at 8 p.m. Batavia, the top-ranked team in the Daily Herald Top 20, took third in last year's tournament, beating Wheaton North 65-52 in the third-place game. Elgin fell to Hoffman Estates 68-65 in the fifth-place game last year and Dundee-Crown lost to Fremd 56-48 in the consolation championship tilt.

This year's tournament kicks off at 8:45 a.m. the day after Christmas with defending champion Neuqua Valley taking on Waukegan. The Wildcats beat Highland Park 44-34 to win the 2006 title.

Wheaton North, Highland Park and Buffalo Grove are the other top seeds.

Eight games will be played each day of the tournament with the championship affair scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29.

Six teams ranked in this week's Daily Herald Top 20 are in the Elgin tournament this year, including Batavia (1), Wheaton North (3), Neuqua Valley (6), Buffalo Grove (8), Elgin (9) and Hoffman Estates (11).
