District 87 to hold parent workshop in two languages

Recognizing the need to serve a parent base that speaks multiple languages, Glenbard High School District 87 will hold its first parenting workshop in both Spanish and English.

"Parents, teens and the law" includes two simultaneous panel discussions on the most up-to-date legal news parents need regarding driving laws, gang-related issues and parties.

The sessions are free and open to any parents in DuPage County.

The session will be at 7 tonight at the Marquardt Elementary District 15 administration center, 1912 Glen Ellyn Road in Glendale Heights.

Parents who attended previous workshops scheduled by the district suggested that the bilingual format for those parents who aren't completely comfortable or fluent speaking or understanding English, explained Gilda Ross, District 87 student and community projects coordinator.

Members of the English-language panel will include DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett, Glendale Heights police officer George Pappas, Glenbard East Assistant Principal for Student Services David Wolfe and Glenbard West High School dean Linda Oberg.

DuPage County Associate Circuit Judge Blanche Fawell will open the discussion, then go over to the Spanish-language panel and participate there.

Members of the second discussion group include Carol Stream Special Operations officer Pablo Castro, Carol Stream Police Department social worker Kathleen McNamara, Glenbard East High School social worker Binita Donahue and Lombard police detective Manuel Camuy.

Discussion sessions, also in both languages, are at 6 p.m. prior to the presentation.
