Don't criticize for publishing facts
To the editor: Just finished reading the letter from Ken Kowall of Hoffman Estates chastising the Daily Herald for an "anti-teacher" viewpoint, according to him, relating to teacher compensation.
He states in his letter that "step" and "lane" raises are not unique to teaching but also exist in the private sector.
Well, Mr. Kowall, sometimes that may be true, but not often; but now let's compare apples with apples. Does anyone in the private sector get to retire at the age of 55 with full benefits? And we're talking here of thousands of dollars per month more than the private sector? Does anyone in the private sector get paid for a full 12 months, while working only nine? How many workers in the private sector get as many days off during the work week as school personnel do? Every time you turn around, it's a day here and a week there! No wonder our children are falling so far behind in relation to other developing countries.
So please, Mr. Kowall, stop criticizing the Daily Herald for trying to inform the reading public about the true state of affairs in our teaching system, and look in the mirror.
