Marian gets $4,900 library grant
One of the challenges facing students in the Internet world is determining how to decide which Internet sites will provide them with accurate information they need to complete class and homework assignments.
In an effort to lessen the challenge this problem, the Library Media Center at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock will use a $4,900 Library Services and Technology Grant from the Illinois State Library to teach students how to evaluate Web sites and compare information available on the Internet with book sources.
During the first day of a two-day workshop, freshmen will learn how to identify the different aspects of a Web site that determine whether it is appropriate and useful. Some of these aspects include authorship of the Web site, currency of information, search capabilities and links to other Web sites.
On the second day, students will compare information available on Web sites with information available in new books purchased with the grant money in order to determine when a book source can provide better information than a Web site.
