BG pools its efforts in solid start
On Friday, some Mid-Suburban baselines were set in the pool.
As area teams opened the boys swimming season, times and efforts were set to improve upon -- and for Buffalo Grove, it was a good start.
The Bison showed some depth as they swam past host Hoffman Estates 131-53.
In the opening race, the 200-meter medley relay, Mike Hausfeld, Jeff Grossich, Adrian Sadkowski and Tom Galla swam to a 2:01.25 win.
"I'm pleased with the way the kids came out tonight," said Buffalo Grove coach Jamie Klotz. "We've been working pretty hard this week. We've continued to do our morning swimming so they're a little tired right now. There's some guys that have a chance to really do something special this year."
Daniel Karpiyevich added two individual firsts for the Bison, beginning with his 2:25.47 in the IM. In the 100 free, Karpiyevich (58.43) led a 1-2-3 finish for BG with Grossich (58.45) and Ryan Higgins (1:04.21). Mike Hausfeld added firsts in the butterfly (1:05.36) and backstroke (1:05.71).
The evening began on the diving boards, where Einar Zieske scored 157.70 points to win for the Bison.
"I didn't do very well my first dive, but I did the rest pretty well," Zieske said. "I got a pretty nice score."
Pat Mason swam two great races for the Hawks. In both the 200 (2:08.06) and 400 (4:36.07) freestyles, he swam close with BG's Brad Lotzer for the first 100 meters and then pulled away for the win.
"I felt good today," Mason said. "I just paced myself from the beginning and let it loose at the end."
"A number of guys have been swimming in the off-season," said Hoffman assistant coach Tom Fidler of a group that included Mason. "It really showed. The rest of the guys are going to come along as it goes. It's the first meet and it gives us a starting point.
"Pat had a very good meet."
Completing a BG sweep of the relays, Karpiyevich, Galla, Grossich and Sadkowski took the the 200 free (1:48.53) while Karpiyevich, Lotzer, Hausfeld and Sadkowski finished up in the 400 (3:49.53).
Sadkowski added a 26.15 win in the 50. Grossich won the breaststroke in 1:20.12.
