Pedestrian hit by Metra train

A Batavia man was hit and killed by a Metra commuter train on the Union Pacific West Line railroad tracks about 5:18 p.m. Thursday, according to Geneva police.

Geneva police say preliminary reports indicate the victim was seen running onto the tracks into the path of the westbound train, which was traveling about 70 mph on the south set of tracks.

The accident was east of Route 25, near the 200 block of Chalmers Street. Police evidence technicians and coroner's deputies accessed the scene through a resident's backyard, crawling down an embankment to reach the tracks.

Train No. 41, which was due to stop in Geneva before arriving in Elburn at 5:35 p.m., was parked with about one-third of the train on the bridge. There were about 150 passengers.

Many of the passengers walked from the accident site west to the Geneva train station about three-quarters of a mile away, crossing the river via a bicycle-pedestrian bridge at the south end of Island Park.

Those traveling to the LaFox and Elburn stations took later trains.

Commuter trains were moving through the area again by 6:45 p.m., but were running up to 65 minutes behind schedule.

Coroner's deputies removed the body about 6:30 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for 11 a.m. today.
