New charges for McHenry man convicted of buying beer for teen

A McHenry man awaiting sentencing for providing beer for a teenage drinking party that turned fatal for one guest is facing new charges after authorities say he punched a deputy and paramedic early Thursday morning.

Edward Jungmann, 24, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery stemming from an incident outside his home that began with a check on his well-being.

McHenry County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Monday said a deputy and rescue crew responded to Jungmann's residence at about 4 a.m. Thursday after he made a troubling 911 call from inside the home.

Jungmann, Monday said, initially fled the home after the call was made, but returned just as the deputy was leaving.

Because of concerns about his condition, authorities at the scene decided to take Jungmann to Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry for an evaluation.

Jungmann, Monday said, resisted violently.

"When he was in the ambulance he punched one of the rescue squad workers and then outside the ambulance he punched one of our deputies," he said.

Neither was seriously injured and Jungmann eventually was taken to the hospital, where he remained late Thursday.

The charges against him are Class 3 felonies, punishable by a maximum two to five years in prison.

Jungmann already is facing up to a year in the McHenry County jail for his Oct. 23 conviction of unlawful delivery of alcohol to a minor.

The charge stemmed from allegations Jungmann bought two cases of beer on March 17, 2005, for a friend's 17-year-old sister.

The girl and her friends drank the beer during a party that same day. One of the party guests, Jamie Lyn Smith, 17, of Hebron, was driving drunk after the party when she lost control of her car on Route 47 near her hometown and struck a telephone pole. She died from her injuries about eight months later.

Jungmann is scheduled to be sentenced on that case Jan. 10.
