Wheaton making progress on probe of fatal accident

Wheaton police said Wednesday they've determined a little more about an accident last week that killed a 51-year-old woman.

After the Nov. 19 crash, police said they couldn't determine which direction the two vehicles involved were headed.

Deputy Police Chief Thomas Meloni said investigators determined Jeremy Miele, 22, of Wheaton, was driving north on Main Street in a 2000 Chevrolet van just before 10 p.m. He struck a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Joanne Shain, who was going west on Elm Street, police said.

Meloni said investigators still aren't sure what caused the accident at the intersection with a four-way stop sign.

Shain's family said earlier they knew she was headed in that direction because she was en route to pick up her younger daughter from a party. When she failed to arrive, her husband followed the same route hoping to determine why.

The investigation is continuing, and authorities are awaiting toxicology results, which could take between four and six weeks.
