Hampshire 59, Antioch 44: Things could have gone either way for Hampshire this weekend. To Whip-Purs' coach Sue Ellett's delight, they went the right way.
Hampshire erased a 4-point halftime deficit by outscoring Antioch 22-9 in the third quarter on its way to a 59-44 win in the fifth-place game of the 20th annual Geneva Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.
"The last few years we've come out of here pretty beat up physically and mentally," said Ellett. "This year we're coming out of here with confidence. I'm really excited coming out of the Geneva tournament for the first time in a long time."
As she should be. After a 20-point loss to Rosary to open the tournament, the Whips (3-2) fell to runner-up Providence by 9 before coming back to beat Wheaton North Friday and Antioch Saturday.
Senior Mallory Koster led the way for the Whips again in Saturday's win, scoring 17 points and nailing two huge 3-pointers early in the third quarter to spark the Whips' winning surge.
Antioch (1-3) controlled much of the physical first half, leading by as many as 7 points late in the second quarter but Hampshire went on a 5-2 run to end the half, closing within 4.
"We were more aggressive than they were in the first half and then they came out strong in the second half," Antioch coach Tim Borries said. "They came out aggressive and we didn't respond."
Christine Gaborek led the Sequoits, who shot 16 of 55, with 9 points. Andi Potkonjak and Brittany Deem had 8 points each.
