Fire crews track cell phone to rescue teen injured in Busse Woods
Firefighters rescued an injured 14-year-old boy in Busse Woods by using emergency coordinates from his cell phone to find him in Friday's freezing temperatures, officials said.
Emergency officials got a 911 call around 4:20 p.m. from the boy, who climbed a tree after being startled by something and fell out of the tree, hurting his neck and back, in the forest preserve north of Higgins Road, Elk Grove Village fire officials said.
The boy stayed on the line with emergency dispatchers while they tracked his coordinates from the cell phone, and firefighters used their phone so dispatchers could track how close they were to each other in the darkness, officials said.
The boy tried to describe where he was, but his injuries left him on his back, unable to move.
Rescuers tried shouting for the boy but couldn't hear clearly over the noise of media helicopters, officials said.
Rescuers found the boy after searching for about an hour and a half. He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge for his injuries, which included the beginning stages of hypothermia, officials said.
Schaumburg and Palatine Rural Fire Protection District officials assisted Elk Grove Village firefighters and paramedics in the search.
