Campton Twp. adds open space
Campton Township recently purchased a 55-acre addition to its massive Headwaters Conservation Area as part of its heralded open-space acquisition program.
The township paid the Motz family $2.8 million for the property, known locally as the Moulding homestead. It is located on the north side of Route 38 just east of Anderson Road.
The land is adjacent to the 244-acre Headwaters site, purchased by the township in 2003. In addition to a family farm, the property also features a home that is more than 100 years old.
The Motz family purchased the land in 1937. Bud Motz, of Batavia, said his family is "grateful and proud" that the land will be preserved for generations to come.
"Four generations of Motzes have enjoyed being part of the Elburn community and the rural lifestyle," Motz said.
The township has purchased more than 1,000 acres of open space since voters approved tax increases in 2001 and 2005 for that purpose. Voters authorized $18 million in the first referendum and $28 million in the second.
Officials have yet to devise a plan for the property, Campton Township Supervisor Neal Anderson said.
"In the short term we might farm it maybe one more year," Anderson said. "That will give us time to put a plan together."
Officials also are working with several landowners to purchase a nearby 60-acre parcel off Beith Road, Anderson said. More details should be available in January if a deal is reached, he said.
