Briefs: Stevenson lauded by state

Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire is one of 10 high schools in the state to receive the Academic Excellence Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. For a high school to earn the award, 80 percent of its students must have met or exceeded state standards in reading and mathematics for at least three consecutive years and must have attained adequate yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind Act in 2005 and 2006. Five of the other high schools honored are in the suburbs: Deerfield, Glenbrook North, Lake Forest, Naperville Central and New Trier. In addition, five schools from the elementary districts that send students to Stevenson also received Academic Excellence Awards. They are Wright Junior High School, Half Day Elementary School and Sprague Elementary School in Lincolnshire; Ivy Hall Elementary School in Buffalo Grove and Kildeer Countryside Elementary School in Long Grove.

Board nixes auto body shop

Central Auto Body will not be opening an outlet in Antioch. The village board rejected a request by owners this week to rezone land at the northwest corner of Route 83 and Briar Terrace to permit the business. The vote came after homeowners in the Antioch Hills subdivision flooded the meeting to oppose the rezone request. Central Auto Body has been in existence for 22 years and has other locations in Zion, Grayslake, Waukegan and Crystal Lake.

Abbott recognized

Abbott has received the annual Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Award for the sixth time in the last seven years, according to a release issued by the company Wednesday. The 21st annual Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards recognize businesses and organizations in Illinois for significant achievements in protecting the environment and strengthening the economy. The award is administered by the Waste Management and Research Center, a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Abbott was recognized for implementing pollution prevention projects at its pharmaceutical fermentation manufacturing operations in North Chicago in 2006.
