Free throws help D-C get win; Wave triumphs

Dundee-Crown girls basketball coach Joe Komaromy knows the importance of free throws.

Komaromy's Chargers made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 2 minutes to secure a 50-46 win over St. Viator in the final game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday night in Carpentersville.

"The kids came through when they had to," said Komaromy. "We made some big shots. We were a little sloppy. But I will take 3-1 in the tournament anytime."

Kathleen Collingbourne, who had a game high 16 points, was 4 of 4 from the line while Robyn Staudenmaier made 2-of-2 and Sierra Danner was 1-of-1 as the Chargers were able to hold off the Lions.

With D-C leading 49-46, the Lions had one last chance to at least tie, but the Charger defense stiffened and forced a turnover.

Staudenmaier backed Collingbourne with 13 points while Kate Leigh-Pilson scored 9, all in the fourth quarter.

Pilson's layup gave the Chargers the lead for good, 45-43 With 3:53 left.

Burlington Central 49, Marengo 44: Jordan Maisto is only a sophomore and is perhaps generously listed on the roster at 5-foot-3, but she came up big for Burlington Central. The Rockets' point guard made 4 of 5 free throws in the final 30 seconds as the Rockets held off Marengo for fifth place in the Central Thanksgiving Classic girls basketball tournament Wednesday.

Maisto and Melanie Laird scored 15 points apiece to lead the Rockets. Maisto was voted to the all-tournament team, along with Cory Bazany, who added 10 points and 7 rebounds for Central.

Maisto made 8 of 9 free throws for the game, including 6 of 7 in the final period, while the rest of the Rockets made only 8 of 24.

Maisto made 1 of 2 free throws after Marengo called a timeout it didn't have with 4 seconds left. That free throw made it a two-possession game at 48-44.

"I thought tonight we came together as a team," said Central coach Darlene Guyett. "We got down, we got the lead, and we maintained it down the stretch when we needed to."

Central (4-2) led 27-21 with time running down in the first half, but the Indians scored 7 quick points to take a 1-point halftime advantage.

Marengo continued the run by scoring 2 quick baskets to open the second half. However, the Rockets held Marengo scoreless for the rest of the quarter while retaking the lead at 35-32.

"We made really good passes, and we made the stops when we had to," said Laird, who is happy just to be back on the court after missing last year with an injury.

Laird also had 5 rebounds and 4 blocks before fouling out with 8 seconds left.

Brianna Conran added 6 points for Central.

Marissa Haskins led Marengo with 15 points.

Burlington led 18-16 after a fast-paced first quarter, but then the game's pace slowed, and the teams just about doubled that score through 3 quarters.

The Rockets shot 58 percent from the field in the first half, and finished at 47 percent for the game.

St. Edward 53, North Boone 34: The Green Wave broke out to a 28-5 lead at halftime and never looked back, winning their season opener in the Dakota tournament.

Katie Yohn led the Wave with 25 points, including two 3-pointers. Celeste Von Ahnen added 10 points for St. Edward, which will play River Ridge in the semifinals on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Fremd 48, Jacobs 34: Ed Haugens realizes improvement for his 2007-08 Jacobs team will take some time.

Fremd proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles, posting a 48-34 win in the final round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

"We didn't rebound well, we didn't play defense well, we didn't shoot well and we made too many turnovers," said Haugens. "Other than that we played very well. Instead of worrying about winning a game, we need to worry about winning every possession."

Jacobs (1-3) was hurt by 22 percent shooting. The Golden Eagles made only 12 of 50 shots in the game and was also committed 23 turnovers.

Fremd (2-2) never trailed and was up by as many as 21 points on three different occasions.

After outscoring Jacobs 11-3 in the third quarter, the Vikings held a 42-23 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"Overall we had a solid effort," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "We've played better every game. That's what you want at this time of year."

Taylor Glassman led Fremd with 13 points and Maria Tambaria had 13 points for Jacobs.

Grayslake North 51, Prairie Ridge 37: Anna Patras had 9 points and Shannon Hennelly added 7 but Prairie Ridge (2-4) fell to Grayslake North at the Mundelein tournament.

Hononegah 51, Cary-Grove 36: The Trojans (3-1) fell behind 27-14 at halftime and couldn't recover in losing their final game of the Dundee-Crown tournament.

Danielle Smith led Cary-Grove with 10 points.

"At this point (Hononegah) is a better team than we are," said Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert. "We're a young team but we'll come together."
