Briefs: Motorola unit sale approved

SCHAUMBURG -- St. Louis-based Diversified manufacturer Emerson Electric Co. won permission from the European Commission Tuesday to buy Motorola Inc.'s embedded communications computing unit for $350 million in cash. The Motorola unit provides computers built into large and complex pieces of equipment, such as telephone networks and medical scanners.

Walgreen CEO gets $5.2 million

DEERFIELD -- Walgreen Co. Chief Executive Jeffrey A. Rein received compensation the drugstore chain valued at $5.16 million during the 2007 fiscal year, according to an analysis of a regulatory filing Tuesday. Rein was paid a salary of $1.12 million. The bulk of his pay package came in stock and options.

Burger King aims at McDonald's

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Burger King Corp. plans to test a $1 double cheeseburger that would challenge one of McDonald's Corp.'s best-selling items. Burger King said it will feature a larger double cheeseburger than McDonald's at a heavily discounted rate in three unnamed U.S. markets early next year.

Oil climbs again, tops $98 a barrel

NEW YORK -- Oil prices resumed their march toward $100 Tuesday, rising to records over $98 a barrel as futures drew strength from a declining dollar, news of refinery problems and speculation that the Federal Reserve will again cut interest rates. Light, sweet crude for January delivery surged $3.39 to settle at a record $98.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Target profit off 4 percent

MINNEAPOLIS -- Target Corp. said Tuesday third-quarter earnings dipped 4 percent because of weak sales in high-margin categories such as clothing and home furnishings. Earnings fell to $483 million, or 56 cents per share, from $506 million, or 59 cents per share, in the prior year. Target also said its board authorized a new $10 billion share buyback program.
