Pantry restocking success
Kingswood United Methodist Church in Buffalo Grove collected almost 300 shopping bags of food on Nov. 11 as part of the annual gathering for the church's Emergency Food Pantry. The pantry serves an average of 23 families a week. Buffalo Grove High School students on Monday also brought a donation to the pantry. The pantry is looking for more donations during Thanksgiving, where the need is usually greater. For more information, call the Rev. Deanna Mede at (847) 398-0770.
WINGS opens new store
Women in Need Growing Stronger has just opened a resale store in Schaumburg, with a grand opening including specials and discounts planned for Dec. 1. The new store is located at 855 W. Higgins Road. WINGS operates resale stores in Niles, Palatine and Schaumburg. The resale stores provide a significant amount of income for the agency, which provides transitional and emergency housing and supportive services to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence or who would otherwise be homeless.
Bond reduced for teenager
Bond was reduced Monday for a Hanover Park 19-year-old accused of luring a man to a parking lot where he was ambushed and robbed by two men. Jackie Yeazell's bond was cut from $75,000 to $30,000, the same amount set by another judge for codefendants Bryant Blegen and Stanley Lind. Each faces one count of robbery. Yeazell's attorney said his client has no criminal background and presented teachers' statements describing her as a well-mannered and respectful student. Yeazell, who along with another female connected with the victim through Craigslist, was ordered to stay away from the Internet should she post bond. The defendants are to appear in court Dec. 23.
Collecting toys
Optometrist Robert Gerowitz will be collecting toys at his office at 4880 Euclid Ave. in Palatine until Dec. 10 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois as part of their holiday toy drive.
Make-A-Wish Foundation sponsors holiday parties for critically ill children and grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy. Call (847) 705-7777 for information.
Wheeling parks honored
The Wheeling Park District has been recognized as an Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Parks and Recreation Association Distinguished Agency. This recognition is the highest honor the agencies give and is the result of the park district's continuing effort to provide park and recreation opportunities for the residents of the community that are of the highest quality. A committee visited the district Nov. 9, scoring it in areas of general management, finance and business operations, facilities and parks, personnel, recreation services and legal. Less than 10 percent of eligible agencies earn the honor.
Truck clips phone wire
A garbage truck hit a telephone wire on Arlington Heights Road between Thomas and Olive streets in Arlington Heights about 3:30 p.m. Monday, police said. No one was injured. Parts of the road were shut down for up to two hours after the accident while the line was fixed, officials said.
3 arrested in solicitation
Three people were arrested on charges relating to solicitation of a prostitute Friday in Bartlett. Jeffrey Duncan, 41, of 194-B Robert Court, Bartlett, was charged with patronizing a prostitute; Jeffrey Powell, 19, of 194-B Robert Court, Bartlett, was charged with soliciting for prostitution; and Samantha Hicks, 17, of 1006 Sandpiper Court, Bartlett, was charged with prostitution, a police report said. All three have court on Nov. 28.
